Microsoft just launched a new edition of Windows 11 called Windows 11 SE. Let us take a closer look at what this new Windows SE is.
What is Windows 11 SE?
Windows 11 SE is a kind of lightweight version of Windows 11 built on top of specific hardware. It is made for students and educational institutions specifically. Microsoft has directly said that Windows 11 SE is not made for personal home use. So unlike Windows 11, you can not just download the ISO of Windows 11 SE and install it on your PC. Also, there won't be any store in Windows 11 SE. It will have a very controlled environment
Basically, Windows 11 SE is Microsoft's version of Chrome OS. Selected laptops would be shipped with Windows 11. Microsoft has partnered with some of the major brands like Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, etc, with many others to follow soon.
Windows 11 SE will come preinstalled with the PC. There is no way to 'upgrade' your PC from another version of Windows to Windows 11 SE.
Microsoft has also stated that Windows 11 SE devices will be available at entry-level prices. It was announced on November 9th and will be available by January 2022.
Conclusion
Windows 11 SE is clearly Microsoft's attempt to enter into the education market currently dominated by Chromebooks running Chrome OS. But it is not going to be a cakewalk for Microsoft. While operating systems like Windows 10 and Windows 11 run decently only on PCs with medium to high specifications, Chrome OS is nastily popular for running on super cheap and low-end hardware. This has led to Chromebooks gaining an almost uncontested market in the education world. But it would be certainly very good to have another variety take part in the education market. After all, variety is always good for the market!
