An eSIM is a digital SIM that is embedded directly into a device and can connect to any operator that provides eSIM services. It works the same way as a physical SIM card and is pre-installed.
How does an eSIM work?
You need to install an eSIM profile to use its services (scan the QR code your carrier provides or an activation code). You can install eSIM profiles from multiple operators and can easily switch between them as and when needed. For example, you can have separate eSIM profiles and data plans for home, travel and official work.
To enjoy the services, your device must be unlocked or you cannot use eSIM even when your device is eSIM compatible. If the device is locked, you can only use an eSIM profile from the carrier you bought your device from. To unlock your device, you need to contact your carrier and request to unlock your device. You would have to provide IMEI of the device for that.
An eSIM is as secure as a physical SIM card and it provides more secure access to the internet than public Wi-Fi. It has, just like physical SIM cards, private access, end-to-end control of data, encryption and authentication.
Some benefits of an eSIM include- you don't have to look for a store to get your SIM or even get an ejector tool to change SIMs. If you are a frequent traveller, you can easily switch between your SIMs with just a few clicks as and when you change your location.
Since Apple introduced eSIM in Watch 3 and 2nd generation iPad pro devices in 2017, several more smartphone makers have introduced this technology in their devices.
