The battle between laptops and desktops has been going on for much long. Let us try our best today to settle this battle. We would be categorizing various aspects in which we are going to compare the two types of PCs, and we will see who wins in the end!
Processor Performance
Desktop Computers generally have a processor which has better performance compared to a laptop. This is generally because the size of a desktop processor is bigger than its Laptop counterpart. So the processor power win goes to the desktop processors.
Portability
Laptops are much lightweight than the desktops. They are also present in a single form factor rather than into different components like Monitor, CPU Box, Speakers, etc. as in a desktop. So, this makes Laptops much more portable than desktops, making them the winner in this one.
Screen real estate
Desktops generally have more real estate when it comes to laptops in screen. So, this one goes to the Desktop side!
Power Consumption
As the desktops have bigger and relatively more powerful components than a laptop in the same price range, thus it is safe to say that for a same price range, a desktop generally consumes more power than a laptop. A laptop has to manage on battery too, which limits its power consumption even further. So, this round goes to the Laptops!
Specs for Price
Generally if you assemble a desktop, you can get more powerful components than you would if you bought a laptop for the same price. So, this win goes to the Desktops!
Gaming performance
Of course if we compare a gaming laptop with a low spec desktop, then the laptop is bound to win. But again, for the same price point, desktops perform better at gaming. This is because of a couple of things. One, when you assemble a desktop, you can put a relatively more powerful graphics card and other components into your desktop than what you would get for a same-priced laptop. And second, there is plenty of room for proper ventilation in Desktops. In laptops, everything is packed into a tight space, making the temperature rise in a much less amount of time than it would in a desktop, thus causing thermal throttling. This one goes to the Desktops!
Upgradability
You can practically change anything you wanted to in a Desktop from RAM, SSD, Hard Drive, Motherboard, Processor to Power supply. But in a laptop, you can change, or upgrade only the RAM and the hard drive, and/or SSD, at least for majority of the cases. So this one also goes to the Desktops!
Conclusion
Overall in the end it all comes down to personal preference, and what you are buying your new PC for. If portability is something that matters to you, then your only option is a laptop. If gaming or any other heavy power usage in one place is your thing, then you can absolutely go for Desktops as they would offer greater specs for the same price.
