How to properly maintain your Windows PC?

We all face certain annoying instances when our PCs do not performing like we want them to. They either become slow, start throttling or show some other weird signs. Well, most of the time this might be an indication that your PC needs maintenance. So today we are going to tell you what can you do to make your dear PC work at its optimum levels so that it never betrays you in the middle of an important task again!

Check for viruses and malware

Has the performance of your PC decreased suddenly? Well, it might be due to creepy programs like viruses, malware, spyware, etc. These programs can get into your PC if you download anything from unofficial or untrusted sources. But even if you get a virus, malware, or any other program like that, do not worry. There are many effective ways to get rid of the culprit from your PC.

Windows Security

Windows Security is a very easy way to scan your PC for viruses, malware, spyware, adware, etc. It is not like the old Windows Defender. You can either do a quick scan or a full scan to check for viruses and if there are viruses, then hopefully remove them. To do this, go to Settings and click on 'Updates and Security'. Then click on 'Windows Security'. After that, go to 'Virus and threat protection' and start a scan of your PC.

Defragment and Optimize Drives

Many times your Hard Drive can become fragmented, which might reduce its performance. To keep your hard drive healthy, you need to defragment it periodically (once a week). You can do so by searching for 'Defragment and Optimize Drives' in the search bar, and then click on it. Then select your hard drive and click on 'Optimize'. This will defragment your Hard Drive. If you have an SSD, follow the same steps as above and it will 'trim' the SSD instead of defragmenting it, as defragmenting can be harmful to an SSD, but trimming isn't.

Check for corrupt system files

Now that we have both checked for viruses and defragmented and/or trimmed the drives, it is time to check if our system has corrupt files in it or not. There is a very easy way to do that.

In the search bar, type 'cmd'. The Command Prompt option will appear in the search results. Then right-click on the 'Command Prompt' option and select 'Run as Administrator from the menu. If you are prompted whether or not to open Command Prompt, just click on yes.

Once Command Prompt is open, type this command in it - sfc /scannow and press enter.

It will automatically check your PC for any corrupt files and try to repair them. At the end of the verification, it would even give you a message saying whether it found 'integrity violations'

or not, and if so, whether it repaired them or not.

Fresh Installation of Windows

Sometimes none of the diagnostics or repairs can fix your software. In that case, you must resort to your last option - TO REINSTALL WINDOWS.

There are a couple of ways to do that.

You can go to Settings ----> Update and Security ----> Recovery and then click on 'Get started' under the 'Reset your PC' option. This will reset your whole PC. You can either choose to keep all your files or just delete everything and start as new. Please take any important backup of your files before performing this.

Alternatively, you can download a fresh ISO of Windows 10 from Microsoft's official website using the 'Media Creation Tool', and create a bootable USB drive, and perform a full clean installation from there. Do this only if you know what you are doing!

Keep your PC clean and check for any corrupt Hardware

The problem might not even lie in your Software. A component of your Hardware might be damaged or dead which might be impacting the performance or usability of your PC. Make sure to keep your PC clean from inside every 6 months or so. Do not try to clean your PC from the inside yourself. Always let a professional do it.
