Our atmosphere is very essential for sustaining biotic and abiotic factors on Earth. One of the services which our atmosphere provides is climate. The change in the Earth's environment from place to place and from time to time provides scope for some organisms to survive and make in favourable conditions for the others. So, here we discuss what is climate, how is climate different from weather, what is climate change and how it affects the life of organisms on Earth.
So start with the basic question, What is climate? So, the climate is the average weather conditions or long term weather pattern for a particular area. Now from this definition, you get an idea. Now we must ask: What is the basic difference between climate and weather? Weather shows short term conditions while climate represents long term atmospheric changes.
Variations in the pattern of weather are called Climate Change. Recently, climate change has become a major concern for our home planet ‘Earth’. and scientists and environmentalists taking actions for its protection. Increasing temperature leading to global warming, droughts, floods etc, affecting directly or indirectly almost every individual and organism. E.g., those who are adapted to cold temperatures are affected adversely if global temperature starts increasing and this led to a decrease in their survival rate. Global warming mainly derives from greenhouse gases whose major constituents are CO2 & CH4. Co2 is mainly produced from fossil fuels and also due to many reasons like deforestation, etc. Along with global warming, variation in precipitation also affects the pattern of the biotic population as each organism depends on water. Many different types of pollution affect the environment in many ways directly or indirectly like acid rain, microplastic pollution etc.
Climate change affects living organisms in many other ways. An organism can't survive if the surrounding temperature is not optimum according to its body. The migration activity of organisms gets disturbed. Seasonal breeders activity also shows variations due to variation in climate.
So, here we have discussed various types and impacts of climate change. Our environment is very essential for our survival and it's our responsibility to protect it and make our home planet a safe and comfortable place to live. But this is not all about climate change.
