Android app support launched in Windows 11!

Windows 11 was announced to the world on 24th June, and it was released for the insiders about a week later. After about 3 months of rigorous bug fixes and optimizations, it was released to the general public on October 5th, 2021, with most of the features promised during the Microsoft Event.

Backstory

One thing was missing from both the final and the insider builds - Android App support. Microsoft had said in the Microsoft Event on June 24th that Windows 11 would be able to run android apps natively. Microsoft had partnered with the Amazon App store to make this possible. But as the insider builds started coming out, people asked questions as to why the android app support was not present yet, to which Microsoft announced that Android app support would be available by 2022.

How does Android App support work?

After all this, finally, Android app support has been released for insiders on the beta channel to test and report on the bugs and glitches present. The android app support is made possible by 'Windows Subsystem for Android', just as Linux support in Windows is made possible by 'Windows Subsystem for Linux'.

So how does it work? To get Android App Support in Windows 11, you have to open Windows Store and install the 'Amazon Appstore' from there. After that, Amazon Appstore would be visible in your app list. Just open it and log in with your Amazon account. You must have an Amazon account to log in. After that, you can install all the apps available in the Amazon Appstore. Currently, only a fixed number of apps are available on the Amazon Appstore, but Microsoft says more apps will be added soon.

One crucial thing to note is that currently, the Android App support is available only for the US. To get the feature in other parts of the world, you would have to set your region to the US and also have a US-based Amazon account. Microsoft is still to announce the release of this feature to other regions of the world.

Conclusion

There is still a lot to be done as far as Android App support for WIndows goes. Currently, the performance of normal apps like Kindle has been very good in Windows 11. But some resource-demanding applications like games might not work to their full potential for some time. It is also a resource-demanding feature as it uses virtualization to run another operating system inside your operating system. So systems with low hardware resources might struggle to run it. It is a very nice project and it will surely unify both the operating systems in the upcoming time when everything is getting linked together!
