WhatsApp recently announced that it would stop working on some android and iOS devices. The Facebook-owned company will cease to work on -
Android phones running version 4.0.4 or earlier
iPhones running iOS 9 or earlier
It won't matter even if your smartphone functions perfectly. You would ultimately have to face the two choices -
Buy a new phone to continue using WhatsApp
Or check for any software updates, if you have not already done so, and keep your fingers crossed in the hope that there might be a software update for your phone which might just push your phone over the threshold requirements.
Almost 40 phone manufacturers have users in the world still running software below the minimum requirements. WhatsApp itself has almost 2 Billion users worldwide, many of which are going to be affected by this. This new announcement will come into effect on November 1st, 2021.
According to WhatsApp, the reason behind this decision is that these phones are too old now, and to keep WhatsApp up to date in these phones would demand much more resources, which these phones will simply struggle to provide, or not be able to provide at all!
Secondly, these software versions have been outdated for a significant amount of time now and thus, lack most of the modern security features and necessary patches. This makes them extremely vulnerable to modern-day attacks and cybercrime. It is almost impossible for WhatsApp to provide the same level of security to these phones if their core software and hardware are so much outdated.
