Apple has finally released MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch laptops in the Apple Event held on October 18th, 2021. The laptops come with a variety of changes and improvements over the previous generation of MacBooks. So let us take a quick look at the specs of the MacBook Pro 14 and 16-inch laptops -
Chip improvements
The new MacBooks can be configured with two new processors from Apple - The M1 Pro and the M1 Max. Both the chips are a major upgrade from the already beast of a chip that M1 was, at it had annihilated its Intel predecessors. Let us look at the specifications of both the chips -
M1 Pro -
10-core CPU
8 high performance and 2 high-efficiency (for lighter tasks) cores.
16-core GPU
Up to 32 Gigabytes of RAM.
Built on 5 nm process.
Apple claims it would deliver 70% faster CPU performance than M1 and 2x faster GPU performance than its predecessor M1 chip.
M1 Max -
Physically bigger than the M1 and the M1 Pro.
10-core CPU (same as M1 Pro)
32-core GPU
Up to 64 Gigabytes of RAM.
Apple claims that it has 4x faster GPU performance than M1.
Ports in the MacBook Pros
Apple has decided to bring back the ports which is removed a couple of years ago from the MacBooks. The new MacBook Pro lineup now has -
1 HDMI Port
3 Thunderbolt 4 ports
An SD card slot
The headphone jack in the MacBook Pros now supports high impedance headphones.
Display
Both the MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch now have a 'Liquid Retina ProMotion Display' with a frame rate of 120 Hz. The displays have a peak brightness of up to 1600 nits.
Bezels, notch, and camera
The new MacBook Pros have 3.5 mm wide bezels on the sides and the top, which Apple claims to be 24% thinner than the previous generation MacBooks. A polarizing decision in this field is the introduction of an iPhone-like notch on the top. The notch exists in the middle and kind of dips into where the menu bar is present, so as it does not cover any real content and gives full-screen real estate.
There is no Face ID present in the notch, despite many hoping for it on seeing the notch. The webcam, although, has received an upgrade -
1080p FaceTime HD Camera
New 4-element lens
New f/2.0 aperture
Magsafe is back!
Apple has brought the Magsafe connector back into the MacBook Pros. What is Magsafe, you might ask? Well, Magsafe is a pin-based charging connector in the MacBooks, which was removed by Apple. For the 14-inch MacBook Pros, it consists of either 67 or 96 watts, depending on the model of the Laptop. On the 16-inch, it has a power of 140 watts for much faster charging.
Battery life and other changes
The new MacBook Pro 14-inch has a video playback time of 17 hours! The MacBook Pro 16-inch breaks all records as Apple claims it has a video playback time of 21 hours! Apple also said that the Magsafe fast charging can fill up 50% of the battery in just half an hour. Join the vast battery life and the fast charging together and you get an undefeatable beast.
The speakers and mikes have also been greatly improved. Also, the base model of the 14-inch Macbook Pro comes with an 8-core CPU and 14-core GPU. Also, the touch bar in the new MacBooks is gone and it is replaced by actual function keys.
Price
This time the MacBooks are really expensive. The MacBook Pro 14-inch starts from $1999, and the MacBook Pro 16-inch starts at $2499.
