What to do to keep your respiratory system healthy

Breathing problems are quite common during winters due to the smog. Governments have been trying to reduce the smog for decades, but so far they have not been successful. Sometimes, the problem is not with the environment but with our bodies themselves.

So, today we will take a look at how to keep our respiratory system healthy.

Avoid smoking

If you smoke then you must have seen the warning about the damages caused to the lungs by cigarettes. Lung cancer seems to be the most common disease but it can also cause Emphysema. The chemicals that you inhale while smoking damages your lungs, increase mucus secretion and cause inflammation that leads to narrowing of pathways inside the lungs for air.

If you have never smoked, then it is better to not start now.

Try to keep a low exposure to air pollutants

Air pollutants from cars and factories are one of the most common causes of smog and other air pollutants. So, try to keep your exposure to these pollutants at a minimum. You can wear a mask to filter out the polluted air before it reaches your lungs. You should keep your home clean to prevent dust or mould from causing pollution.

You should avoid exercising when the pollution is high or go to a different place with lower pollution levels. If your job demands you to get exposed to certain pollutants then take all the safety precautions.

Breathing and other exercises

Breathing exercises can help you strengthen your lungs. Deep breathing can increase your vital capacity (the maximum amount of air one inhales or exhales during forceful breathing). It improves overall lung function.

When you exercise the oxygen requirement of the body increases, so you breathe faster and your heartbeat is also increased. So, exercising not only keep you fit, your body in shape but also shapes your lungs as well.

Keep your body free from infections

Infections can be dangerous for the lungs and those suffering from other respiratory diseases could be at even higher risk. We all have seen and many have experienced the effects COVID-19 could have on our bodies.

Infections can cause a lot of damages and if it is repeated, they can be fatal too. The best ways to avoid infections are to wash your hands regularly. Try to not touch your face as much as you can. And, take your vaccines on time.

Mask, Sanitizer and Vaccince

With the Omicron variant spreading even faster than the delta variant of the coronavirus, you should take even better care to keep yourself from infections. Use masks, hand sanitisers and maintain social distancing. Because no one wants to re-live the horrors of the 2nd wave.

Diets

Certain food elements can protect the lungs and even reduce the damages caused due to other factors. Some food items that can help to keep your lungs healthy are peppers, apples, turmeric, tomatoes, red cabbage, green tea, barley and many more.

These were some ways about how to keep your respiratory system healthy. We hope this helps you. But, if you feel difficulties in breathing or other symptoms it is better to consult a doctor than the internet.
