Updated: Feb 18, 2022

A woman in NYC has become the first female in the world to get cured of HIV. She has also become the third person in the world to get cured of the disease.

Scientists called it a significant breakthrough because of using the latest methods for curing the disease. The patient has also had a different build from previous patients undergoing a similar type of treatment.

The fact that she was a female who got cured is of great importance (scientifically) and provides new insight into the methods involved in treatment.

Current science predicts that HIV reacts differently in women and men. The person diagnosed with HIV in 2013 got kept under a higher treatment involving transplantation of “cord blood cells.” These stem cells are inside the blood vessels of the umbilical cord.

Two previous male patients who got cured of HIV got donated bone marrow. These transplants are by donors having an HIV-blocking mutation. It is a more risky procedure than a cord blood cell one.

This new treatment procedure got invented by scientists from Weill Cornell Medicine Institute, NYC. The Institute now focus their interest on expanding cancer-related treatments.

The cord blood cells procedure is more trouble-free to perform than bone marrow-based treatment because it is much simpler to find a definite match.

HIV is still a huge medical issue.

Worldwide, over 37 million people contain active HIV in 2020 alone.
