South Korea's capital Seoul's metropolitan government has announced that it is on its way to entering the metaverse. The project has been referred to as "Metaverse Seoul".
Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) intends to create a virtual communication ecosystem that will connect all of its administration. It will include educational, civic, economic, cultural, and tourism services. The plan is to build it in three stages starting from the next year.
Metaverse is defined as 3D virtual environments through conventional personal computing, as well as virtual and augmented reality headsets.
All the activities mentioned above would make use of VR and AR. Citizens would meet their city officials just by putting on their VR headsets.
Seoul has invested about KRW 3.9 billion (about $ 3.3 million). It is a part of the Mayor's Seoul Vision 2030. The pilot program is set to start with a bell-rining ceremony at the end of the year. It will be followed by the rollout of several services like a "Virtual Mayor's Office, Invest Seoul, FinTech Lab, and Seoul Campus Town."
Metaverse will also include virtual versions of famous tourist attractions through a designated "Virtual Tourist Zone". Several lost historical sites would be reconstructed too for visitors to explore.
Seoul Lantern Festival will be held in 2023 in the metaverse and from then every year onwards. There will be safety and convenience content for the socially vulnerable and disabled.
The plan that is to be completed in five years includes 20 promotional tasks. The first stage is "Introduction" at the beginning of 2022. It will be followed by "Expansion" from 2023 to 2024. Finally, it will be finished with "Settlement" from 2025 to 2026.
