Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to expand its reach in space even further in the new year. Apart from carrying out several delayed missions due to the pandemic, ISRO will launch some new missions as well. Let's take a look at the major upcoming ISRO missions.
Aditya L1
ISRO will launch its first mission to the star of our solar system, the Sun, in the third quarter of the year. The Aditya-L1 is a coronagraphy spacecraft that will study the solar atmosphere, solar magnetic storms, and their impacts on Earth.
SSLV
The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle is ISRO's answer to low-cost commercial launches for small satellites. It is developed with an expenditure of $22 million and the cost per launch would be around $4.0-$4.6 million. It can deliver a payload of 600 kg to low Earth orbit and 300 kg to Sun-synchronous orbit. Its maiden flight was expected last month, i.e. December 2021. But, it has been extended up to the first quarter of 2022.
Gaganyaan
India's first crewed mission to space has been in development for a few years now. The first flight in the mission would take place in the second half of 2022. It will be an uncrewed mission. The first crewed flight would be sometime in 2023. ISRO would send a total of three crew members in the space.
Chandrayaan 3
The successor of 2019's Chandrayaan 2 is expected to set forth for the lunar surface in the third quarter of 2022. It will try to achieve what Chandrayaan 2 could not due to a last-minute glitch. The mission would attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface and include a lander and a rover.
