Why the risk of heart attack rises in winter?

heart attack

Approximately 17.9 million people around the world die from cardiovascular disease every year. Of these deaths, 85% were due to heart attack and strokes.

Like all muscles, the heart needs oxygen and during a heart attack, it can't get enough.

In a heart attack, fatty deposits or plaques develop on coronary arteries which supply oxygenated blood to the heart. With the age, these plaques turn into blockages and partially closed artery becomes completely blocked.

Due to this blood flow is cut off to cardiac muscle and oxygen-starved cells start to die within several minutes.

Why heart attack rises in winter?

One of the prime reasons can be attributed that during the cold season the blood vessels constrict, which leads to an increase in blood pressure, which means that the blood has to be pumped harder to travel around the body, making it one of the major factors for the onset of stroke.

Also, there are various changes in the chemical balance in our body during winter including cholesterol levels and some other factors that increase the chances of clotting. Changes in physical activity which usually decreases during the winter months as well as weight gain can play a role.

Probably this is the reason stroke cases go up by 11 percent during winter.
