Earthquakes are one of the most feared natural disasters. They can range from being pretty harmless if they are low-intensity to causing mass destruction and casualties if their magnitude gets relatively higher.
Earthquakes happen when two or more tectonic plates in the Earth's crust collide. During the collision, if the stress overcomes the friction on the edges, the extra energy gets dissipated throughout the Earth's crust, which causes the Earth's crust to shake, thus causing Earthquakes.
As Earthquakes are a bit more common than some other natural disasters, we must know how to properly protect ourselves in case we find ourselves in an Earthquake.
So today let us take a look at the things that one must avoid doing in case of Earthquakes -
Do not roam around: It is very crucial that you stay where you are during an Earthquake. If you are indoors, then stay indoors. Similarly, if you find yourself outdoors, then do not try to get indoors.
Avoid standing in the doorway during an Earthquake: This advice is partially true. If you are in an old house built on a wooden frame, then you can stand in the doorway as the doorways in these houses are relatively safer than the rest of the house. In relatively modern houses, the doorways are as strong as the rest of the house.
If you are in a car, do not get out.
Do not stand below electric poles or overhead electric wires during or immediately after an Earthquake.
Do not spread any rumors or news without verifying it.
Do not stand near Electric switchboards or any electric appliance.
