Medical Science has achieved a major breakthrough in the field of organ transplants. Recently, a 57-year-old patient named David Bennett, who is a resident of Maryland, USA, successfully underwent a major heart transplant. The big achievement is that the donor was not a human, but a pig!
The recipient could not get a human heart for his transplant because he was deemed ineligible for human transplant. This often happens when the health of a recipient is too poor for a transplant, and so the organ is given to someone who might have a higher chance of survival.
The patient David Bennett himself said that it was a do-or-die situation for him. The only two options he had were either to die or to get the heart transplant from the pig. He said that he wanted to live, and the transplant was his only shot at living.
He also said that he now looks forward to getting out of bed after his recovery.
Bartley Griffith, the surgeon who performed the 'xenotransplantation' surgery, said that it this was a breakthrough surgery which brings mankind one step closer to solving the organ shortage crisis.
The patient is being monitored closely, and the surgeons are proceeding very cautiously. Nothing is fully certain as of now, but one thing is quite clear that this new surgery brings in hope for a lot of patients out there who are in desperate need of transplantation but are unable to get one.
