The downfall of BlackBerry -

But then came other major competitors like Google (with Android devices) and Apple (with iPhones), and slowly but surely made sure that BlackBerry gets erased from the competition. But this wasn't solely due to these competitors.

BlackBerry had also played a very major role in its downfall. The primary reason for BlackBerry's downfall was that it did not evolve. It remained stubborn, sitting in its own little bubble and thinking that nothing could touch the image and quality of BlackBerry. Well, guess what? The competition did not just match the quality of BlackBerry but also surpassed it by a huge margin, making BlackBerry little more than a meme.

As a result, BlackBerry stopped its own smartphone production in 2016. BlackBerry was licensed to TCL, which continued producing phones under the name of BlackBerry till 2020.

Despite all these setbacks, BlackBerry still maintained the software in its sold units, giving frequent and reliable 'Over The Air' (OTA) updates. So the phones of BlackBerry continued to become more suitable for a niche category of the customers rather than the mainstream public.

Cut to Jan 2022, BlackBerry has finally decided to end providing software updates to its phones. The company has said that going forward from 4th January 2022, its phones will no longer be reliable even for basic services like SMS, calls, and even Emergency Calls, making using BalckBerry phones unsuitable and impractical for any niche of customers.

This announcement finally means that BlackBerry is finally dead from this world. One can't say that BlackBerry phones were bad phones, as many people used them and had the best experience with them. Even today if you ask the majority of people about BlackBerry devices, most of them would have nothing but good memories about them.
